Thunder Rugby travelled to Kingston last Friday to take on St. Lawrence College during their Spirit Day celebrations. The Thunder women’s squad hung in there in the first half before SLC pulled away in the second, ultimately losing to the Vikings 31-17. Bailey Meraw, Emily Spence, and Taylor Wildenbeest each scored a try for the Thunder and Emily added a convert.
Thunder Rugby opened up their home season on Sunday when they played host to the Fleming Knights at Twin Elm Rugby Park. It was a beautiful day on the pitch and the women were hitting hard. Unfortunately, the resulting score did not reflect the effort given, and the women fell to the Knights 43-8 (largely due to the efforts of one Knights player who scored five tries).
The Women’s Rugby team played host to the Loyalist Lancers on Sunday afternoon. The women displayed far more offensive explosiveness this week, scoring 45 points (7 tries, 5 converts) and securing their first win of the season. Tries were scored by Emily Spence (1), Maureen Foran (2), Taylor Bray (1), Jade Desnoyers (1), Salynn Taylor (1), and Emily Weir (1). Emily Spence also kicked five converts for the Thunder, putting her grand total for the afternoon at 15 points, good enough for her to be recognized as the OCAA’s Athlete of the Week for Rugby! Way to go, Emily! Boxscore
Thunder Rugby went to Peterborough last Saturday to face the Fleming Knights. The women’s team saw rookie Bailey Meraw step up and score a pair of tries for the Thunder, but were otherwise unable to get on track offensively, falling to the Knights 10-46. Boxscore
