Varsity Roundup – Week 4

WOMEN’S SOCCER       (8-0)

The women’s team played three games in six days this past week, securing victories in all three.   They hosted the Loyalist Lancers in their first match, blanking the Lancers 4-0 with goals scored by Vanessa MacMillan, Melissa Harrison, Darby Perry, and Bailey Gassler. They were offensively-dominant, but strong on the defensive side as well, holding Loyalist to a single shot through 90 minutes! Jenna King earned the shutout for the Thunder. Boxscore

In their second game of the weekend, on Saturday, the women faced the Fleming Knights. The Thunder doubled their offensive-output from the night before, winning 8-0, with goals by Breanna Humphreys, Melissa Harrison, Jenna Baldree, Vanessa MacMillan (3), Haleigh Robertson, and Melissa Baynes. Karleigh Bell receives credit for the shutout. Boxscore

The team travelled to Kingston for a rare midweek match against the SLC Vikings on Wednesday, the 5th. Though they trailed 1-0 at the half, they women turned it on in the second half, scoring three times to secure the win and maintain their perfect record. (Boxscore not yet available.)

Next Game: The Thunder host the Cambrian Golden Shield on Saturday, October 8th (kickoff at 1 PM), before heading out on the road for a pair of games in Oshawa and Peterborough against Durham and Fleming on the 14th and 15th. Both the women’s and men’s games against Cambrian are scheduled to be streamed on TV Broadcasting’s Livestream.com page.

MEN’S SOCCER    (6-0)

The men’s team played the Fleming Knights and the SLC Vikings over the past week, winning both matches en route to remaining undefeated in 2016. The match against Fleming was tight all the way and wasn’t decided until near the end of extra time when Marco Natoli connected on a free kick to put the Thunder up 2-1! The other goal scorer for Algonquin was Anthony Legendre. Boxscore

The men’s team travelled to Kingston to face the Vikings on Wednesday evening and they brought home another victory, downing SLC 3-0. (Boxscore not yet available.)

Next Game: The Thunder host the Cambrian Golden Shield this coming Saturday, October the 8th at 3:15 PM. Following that, they head out on the road for games at Durham and Fleming on the 14th and 15th.

WOMEN’S RUGBY    (1-3)

Thunder Rugby went to Peterborough last Saturday to face the Fleming Knights. The women’s team saw rookie Bailey Meraw step up and score a pair of tries for the Thunder, but were otherwise unable to get on track offensively, falling to the Knights 10-46. Boxscore

Next Game: The Thunder will likely have a bye on Saturday, October 15th, as the Loyalist Lancers have withdrawn from competition. Their next game will be their final home game of the season at Twin Elm Rugby Park on Sunday, October 23rd starting at 1 PM.

MEN’S RUGBY    (1-3)

The men’s team also faced the Knights on October 1st, and their game ended with a similar result as they were defeated 8-31. Keith Girard scored a try for Algonquin and Aidan Corrigan connected on a penalty kick. Boxscore

Next Game: The Thunder will travel to Belleville to face the Loyalist Lancers on Saturday, October 15th at 3 PM. (Time could be adjusted with the cancellation of the women’s game. Check ocaa.com for updates.) They will then wrap up their regular season at home against the SLC Vikings on Sunday, October 23rd at 3 PM.
