More about Executive in Residence

The Executive-in-Residence (EIR) Program was created by the Algonquin Students’ Association to foster entrepreneurship at Algonquin College.  The purposes of the program are to:

  • Create awareness of and inspire entrepreneurship in the Algonquin community
  • Provide resources to empower student and faculty entrepreneurship
  • Leverage the links between businesses and student/academic activity at the College
  • Strengthen student/community engagement within and outside the College

Book A Meeting

The EIR has office hours most Wednesdays, from 12:30-2:30 p.m., to meet confidentially with any student, faculty or Alumnus that wishes to pursue an entrepreneurship opportunity.  Initial meetings with the EIR are 30 minutes in duration.

To get the most out of your meeting, please be prepared with the following:

  • to open with a very brief, clear summary of your business idea, and the opportunity it presents (ideally, you should be able to explain it in 60 seconds).
  • to provide some basic validation of the market issue or problem you are solving.
  • to provide a 1-2 page competitive landscape analysis, i.e. who else does what you plan to do (or something similar), why are you different, and why will you “win”?
  • to provide your thoughts on how you would launch the product or service, i.e. what is the compelling value proposition for customers, and how will you engage them?
  • to discuss channels for distributing and generating revenue from the product or service.
  • to review your product/service roadmap, i.e. functions and features for initial launch and to add as it achieves market traction and scale.
  • eventual exit strategy, i.e. who do you think would be interested in partnering or acquiring the business as a whole?
  • a clear description of technical and start-up challenges you need to solve, and the resources you have and also require to do so.
  • there is no ‘I’ in team, so who else is or needs to be on your team to bring your idea to market and make it a success?
